Skirt is one of the popular garments that is worn to cover the lower half of the body. Skirts usually are worn from the waist and can go upto any length till feet as per the necessity/style. Just like any other garment, skirts come in variety of styles and shapes and suit every woman irrespective of their age, complexion, height or weight. It is this versatality that has made the skirts one of the most popular garments all across the world. Here are different types of skirts with pictures to identify each style easily.
Gathered Skirt : It is a casual wear with lots of gathers all around the waist. The length of the skirt can vary. It is usually made of thin material.
Novelty Gathered Skirt : This is a skirt of casual wear, worn by almost all age groups. This skirt has three tiers of usually the same length. The tiers have a large number of gathers at the place of attachment. The circumference of the first tier is double of the round waist measurement. The circumference of the second tier is double of the first tier and the circumference of the third tier is double of the second tier. The cloth used in all the tiers can be same or of different colors.
Two Tier Skirt : This skirt has two tiers which may be of same or different length. There are a number of gathers at the place of attachment of these tiers. It is a casual wear skirt worn by ladies of all age groups. The construction process of a two tier skirt is similar to the novelty gathered skirt.
Straight Skirt : It is a casual wear skirt usually made of thick material. It is almost straight all along its length. There is very little difference between the circumference at the waist line and that at the lower edge.
Hip Rider Skirt : It is a two tied casual wear skirt. The upper tier fits tight around the hips and the lower tier has gathers or pleates. It is usually made of thick material. The skirt can have cross or slit pockets. The upper tier or yoke can be straight, rounded or triangular.
A-Line Skirt : It is a casual wear skirt made up of all types of material. It is tight at the waist and the hips. An A-line shape is given to the garment from the hipline. The skirt can have darts from the waist to the hip line. A-line skirt usually has cross pockets or patch pockets.
Gored Skirt : It is a paneled skirt, with 6 to 8 panels. The number of the panels in front is the same as number of panels at the back. All panels are of the same size. The width of each panel at the waist is half of that at the lower edge. A gored skirt can be of casual as well as formal wear.
Pegged Skirt : It is a tight fitting skirt, which fits tight around the waist, hips and the thighs. The skirt is loose at the knees. This skirt has a full front opening. It is a formal wear skirt and is not very comfortable garment, so it must be avoided for children. It is usually worn by ladies with small waist and hips because it is a very hugging garment and mars the look of person who does not have a very appealing figure.
Half Circular Skirt : It is a flared skirt made of thin material. This skirt is cut on the bias grain. The circumference of the skirt at the lower edge is large. The lower edge is usually finished by machining, lace or pico.
Full Circular Skirt : It is a flared skirt made of thin material. This skirt is cut on the bias grain. The circumference of the skirt at the lower edge is large. This skirt is devoid of a side seam because it is cut on an angle of 360°.
Tulip Skirt : It is a formal wear skirt devoid of a side seam. One part of the skirt overlaps the other. The shape resembles the tulip flower.
Wrap Around Skirt : It is a casual wear skirt, one piece and cut on any grain. The skirt has long belt, which is tied along one end of the skirt, in a knot. This skirt is just wrapped around the waist. To draft this skirt, cut an A-line back skirt, and two A-line front skirts. The front skirt may be slightly reduced in width and altered in shape, as desired.
Handkerchief Skirt : It is a formal type of skirt worn by ladies. The center point at the lower edge hangs down like the tip of a handkerchief.
Shirred/Slashed Skirt : It is a formal skirt which is gathered or pleated in the center front, side, lower or upper edge.
Pleated Skirt : Pleates are used to enclose fullness in a garment, where there is a considerable amount of material to be dealt with. Pleates also add to decoration. Pleated skirts are casual tyoe of skirt. There can be various pleated box, inverted, knife, kick, accordion and sunray. The cloth for these pleates can be same as that of the skirt or contrasting.
